Denza Bao 5: The Chinese SUV with a Punch - Review and Off-Road Abilities (2026)

The Denza Bao 5 is a bold new entrant in the luxury SUV market, blending Chinese engineering prowess with a premium, tech-driven interior. But is it a worthy rival to the iconic Land Rover Defender? I think so, but with a few caveats. The Bao 5's impressive 537bhp and 561lb ft of torque make it a formidable performer, capable of 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds. However, the plug-in hybrid powertrain, while efficient, can be sluggish in lower gear settings, and the ride quality on rough roads is less than ideal. The interior is a tech lover's dream, with three large screens and a host of digital features. But the navigation system could be more user-friendly, and the rear door opening the wrong way for left-hand drive markets is a small but significant oversight. The price is steep, starting at ÂŁ69,500, but BYD CEO Stella Li is confident it will be a hit with European premium customers. In my opinion, the Denza Bao 5 is a strong contender in the luxury SUV segment, offering a unique blend of performance and technology. However, it needs to address some of the ride and usability issues to truly stand out from the competition.
